Ok Jalops, what is this interesting little scoot? I’m in southern PA, and I couldn’t believe someone would have this out with all this snowy crap and slush and mess everywhere. (Also, I couldn’t believe the guy behind me also staring at it as he went by... he had his late ‘60s Corvair out today.)

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Apologies for the obviously shitty drive-by pics from within my filthy DD. I was able to see the word TRIUMPH on the rear bumper but no other identifying information...

That's a triumph stag; there's a purple one near me. I sorta like them, despite the reliability issues

The Staaaaag was the first I ever heard described as a “hairdressers car”, not heard of anything earlier.

Several companies have figured out how to fix most of the issues. I know someone that had his engine rebuilt by Ward, says its been surprisingly dependable since.

That’s funny, I saw a Stag driving around Burbank, CA yesterday. Handsome cars. I hadn’t seen one in person in a long time and thought, I should get a picture for Oppo.

It’s a Stag, but not as I know it: that power bulge may be hiding something different to the usual 3.0 V8 that was the source of much of its reliability issues.

They more usually look like this:

Staaag! Love these cars :) A lot of people over here put Rover V8s in them, and I’ve heard of GM V6s going in them too.

TBH I much prefer the stock SOHC 3.0l V8. Sweeter engine all round, and once you sort out the reliability issues (most of which were caused or exacerbated by poor initial assembly by an increasingly disenfranchised workforce) they can be perfectly reliable.

I also reckon there’s a decent bit of untapped performance potential in them as well. With TR7 pistons you could take them out to 3.3l. As the V8 is two slant 4s welded together (simplification, but accurate enough for these purposes) you could just use TR7 head gaskets. The TR7/Dolomite 1850 valves are slightly larger as well so that would help.

Stick some EFI on top with a bit of porting, some cams and a nice exhaust manifold and I reckon it’d take you a long way :)
